Subject:Cat in the Hat...
Posted by:prettyinpunk420.
Time:7:29 pm.
So...I really really enjoy wearing hats!! I have a crazy hat collection at home wich I love, and every now and then I get really nostalgic, try one on...see it doesn't fit, and get crazy upset.

This week I was coming back from somewhere and I saw some guy wearing a fedora, and I got all upset and really wanted to wear mine. Now I am sure you are sitting there asking yourself, what's the big deal...just put one on...WELLLLL folks, it's not only a big deal, it's a HUGE deal. Because geuss what...I CAN'T! Reason #39 why I hate my dreads and terribly miss my hair: "Lots of fat dreadss resulting in lack of normal hat wearage!"

After I saw the guy wearing his hat, I said to myself, "ok, fuck it...you want to, then you will..." I tried a few different things, and finally found a way to put my dreads up in a low bun thing, and just PULL the hat down. The hat itself is pretty small so it was a bit of a squeeze, but I put on a happy face, and forced myself to suffer for beauty!! Hahaha...so here are pictures. "Hooded pre-dred" and "Hooded post-dred!!"

I've only had my dreads for a few weeks, and I was wondering if there are any dread-friendly dandruff shampoos that'll keep my scalp clean and fresh without moisturizing and ruining my babies. I'm currently using the DreadHead HQ shampoo, and while I like it, I'm finding that it still doesn't wash out as much as I wish it would. Any suggestions? If not...I can live; as I said, I'm only wondering about it...

Subject:Rastaaaa.....
Posted by:prettyinpunk420.
Time:6:59 pm.
Soooo....after a very very very long time, I got my dreads finally done!! Actually I've had them for about 4 months, but I've been abroad so I wasn't able to post. I've been a member for a while and Ms. soulhaus was nice enough (she was getting paid haha) to come to San Fransisco and do them for me about a year ago, but then something happened and I had to cancel. Anyway, I really wanted to get rastot since I hate the fact that it takes me about 45 minutes to brush my hair, and I buy a HUGE bottle of conditoner every 2 weeks. So I figured, hell I'm in India, it's going to suck taking care of them, and I found a guy that EVERYONE talks about, and well 3 days of pain later, I have 69 rastot and a lulu...the yarn thing that I tie them up with!

Here are <strike>some</strike> A LOT of pictures:Collapse )

I really want to get dreads, but very soon I'll be working in the woods for about 12 weeks, going for as long as three weeks with no shower. Is that a bad idea?

I've already done all the research for dreads, so I know how to do them and everything, but it seems like if I won't be able to wash brand new dreads, that could be bad.

Subject:to my dreaded fellows and comrades
Posted by:pieceofthewhole.
Time:6:42 pm.
okay, so I edited this because people were complaining because they misunderstood me. I'm not asking you to shave your head for my art project. I'm saying- HEY if you are cutting your dreads and were planning on throwing them away, why not give them to me instead. I realize that for a lot of people, dreadlocks are a sort of spiritual experience. So don't get your panties all in a bunch. sheesh. Also, I'd like to say that any amount of locks would be welcomed with open arms- like say, if you just trimmed your dreads, or decided you wanted bangs, or even if you just had one little dreadlock you hated and KILLED IT! ahhh! so, just wanted to say that.

ehhh! (I just got back from Canada around 5:30 yesterday morning) So, I'm not all dreaded up like a lot of you folks (I was, at one point in my life...and now I just have one leeeeetle green lock, quite exciting). Anyway though, I'm an artist, (yippee skippeeeee!) and I'm realllly interested in creating experiences + environments for people to experience, very large but VERY detailed. SO. Heh, that's where you come in! I want to make an environment this year- a combination of all the projects I'll work on throughout the school year- so, basically a bunch of pieces designed to fit into this one space but that also stand well on their own. And one of the pieces I wanted to create was sort of a wall with a hole in it (very loosely described) and I wanted people to have to dig their hands into this hole into a weird substance and pull it out, and then read it, kind of reminiscent of squishing your hands through someone's shirt and skin and right into their guts, feeling around and pulling out strange bits of organs, telling a story. (Did I mention most of my artwork is deemed a 'book' even though very few of my pieces even remotely resemble books? They're mainly sculptures with words tucked in, because I like the feel and taste of words and it's hard for me to adequately express myself without them.)

And the weird substance to dig their hands in would be...?

You guessed it! Dreadlocks! Somehow attached to each other- or not, I haven't completely decided yet- possibly knit together or maybe tied... Anyway, yes! The excitement!

And since I don't have dreadlocks on my own head that I could cut off in the thrill of a new art project, I've come to you, asking for help. I think dreadlocks are so extremely beautiful- I can't even explain it. The swirls and bumps and curls and textures and colors- overwhelming. ahhh. Anyway, haha, SO! My point being, after rambling for about four hours, if you are blessed with dreadlocks and you're like, eh, I don't even want dreads anymore/I feel like getting a dreadhawk and shaving half of my head/my mom really hates my dreadlocks and I'd do anything to please her, including cutting off all of my hair- instead of throwing your lovelies into the horrible, stinking, oozing trash, I'd like 'em!

Yeh? I realize how much work dreadlocks are/can be, and I also realize people cut off theirs every day for any reason, aaaand furthermore that some of those people simply throw their hours of love and turmoil into the garbage. So, I'm asking for your dreadlock donations! To be created into an art piece, which, when finished, will sit proudly in photographic form on this lj for all of you to see, and also probably to go into my crazy little space I'm making, which will be in at LEAST one art show. Hopefully more. And hopefully newspapers and such.

SO! my email, which you may use to retrieve my address, to send your darlings to, is blacksketchbookofdoom@hotmail.com

Also- completely sorry if this silly little post of mine isn't allowed, feel free to tear it down and throw it to the wind. Oh, and also again, if anyone is interested, I'm a 17 year old kid named Deanna from Ohio, and I'm planning on art school (or Antioch, bweehaha) next fall. Whooosh, life.

(and I also think I'll crosspost this a bit, because I'm thinkin I'll need a lot of locks :D )

Hello. i suppose i should make the obligitory comment of "i'm new" but i've had my dreads for a little over a year.

I feel like everyone in the world who has dreadlocks, have better locks than me. :(
Part of it is the amount of fly-aways I have and especially the amount of bumps.

well let me know what kinds of things I can do to improve them. meanwhile, entertain yourself with a Flickr slide show of my dreads : By the way, my name is Jess :) please let me know what you think.

thank you

nice to meet you!

Subject:Question about waxes
Posted by:desolatediva.
Time:1:18 pm.
Hi there-

I'm new to the community and I'm stoked I found it! I forget how fabulous LJ can be sometimes...

Anyway, I have a question regarding waxing. I've had my dreads for some time now. It's hard to gage time because I had extensions in my hair [braids] and I decided I was going to let them grow out and start dreading the new growth- once they got about an inch or two from the scalp I took the extensions out and then backcombed the ends... I guess you can say that entire process has been about a year, but I have officially been dready since the end of July of last year.

I love them.

I have a pretty decent maintenance routine- I use Neutrogena (sp?) anti-residue shampoo and I have been using the last bit of that DreadheadHQ wax, which I love. I wax my dreads every couple of weeks just to catch the fly aways and such- but I went to the dreadheadHQ website and needless to say, the wax is a bit out of my budget. I had tried a bit of beeswax before, and though it holds, the petroleum in it wasn't to my liking.

So I guess the point I am trying to get to is: Does anyone know of any over-the-counter waxes (or cheaper ones online) that I can buy that don't contain petroleum but do have the good stuff like Hemp Seed Oil, Beeswax and Vitamin E? Otherwise... it looks like I'm just going to be waiting until I can afford the DHHQ stuff...

Also, any other recommendations on Soaps/shampoos and other products would be fabulous!

I hope to post pictures soon!

Mood: frustrated.
so ive started some dreads, but have been taking a long time to finish them, and still havent. i put some in front about a month ago now, and they're still kinda loose.

ok so, squares are supposed to make round dreads. i have my hair sectioned, and i have pretty thick hair. but the pieces still seem thin, at their about 1x1 sections maybe.

and looking at pictures of everyone elses dreads, it seems they have ALOT of them, and looking at my hair all sectioned, it doesnt look like im goin to be getting alot. and it doesnt seem like they are locking up that well.

help??

So heres the deal:

I've wanted dreads for as long as I can remember and now more then ever the itch to get them is crazily intense. My hair is approximatly up to my butt, or a little shorter, when straightened (photos included), and it has just become a hassle to brush it after showering. I dye it often and I haven't gotten it cut in over 3 years, (no trims either) so it is extremly dead and damaged. This is simply for the fact that I knew I was getting dreads and wanted to have them as long as possible. Now the thing is, I am going to Thailand/India for about a year starting in September, and in Thailand the getting of the dreads is VERY cheap. I know that having them for my trip will save me lots of money in the long run because I go through a Costco size bottle of conditioner almost every 2 or 2 and a half weeks merely so I could brush my hair. BUT...I can't wait until September. So I have a question: Does anyone know where in the A) Northern New Jersey or B) San Fransisco area, I could get them done proffesionaly for a reasonable price? And just for my own sake...by about how much will the length of my hair shorten after I get them done?

Hope you can help!!

Do life.
