okay, so I edited this because people were complaining because they misunderstood me. I'm not asking you to shave your head for my art project. I'm saying- HEY if you are cutting your dreads and were planning on throwing them away, why not give them to me instead. I realize that for a lot of people, dreadlocks are a sort of spiritual experience. So don't get your panties all in a bunch. sheesh. Also, I'd like to say that any amount of locks would be welcomed with open arms- like say, if you just trimmed your dreads, or decided you wanted bangs, or even if you just had one little dreadlock you hated and KILLED IT! ahhh! so, just wanted to say that.
ehhh! (I just got back from Canada around 5:30 yesterday morning) So, I'm not all dreaded up like a lot of you folks (I was, at one point in my life...and now I just have one leeeeetle green lock, quite exciting). Anyway though, I'm an artist, (yippee skippeeeee!) and I'm realllly interested in creating experiences + environments for people to experience, very large but VERY detailed. SO. Heh, that's where you come in! I want to make an environment this year- a combination of all the projects I'll work on throughout the school year- so, basically a bunch of pieces designed to fit into this one space but that also stand well on their own. And one of the pieces I wanted to create was sort of a wall with a hole in it (very loosely described) and I wanted people to have to dig their hands into this hole into a weird substance and pull it out, and then read it, kind of reminiscent of squishing your hands through someone's shirt and skin and right into their guts, feeling around and pulling out strange bits of organs, telling a story. (Did I mention most of my artwork is deemed a 'book' even though very few of my pieces even remotely resemble books? They're mainly sculptures with words tucked in, because I like the feel and taste of words and it's hard for me to adequately express myself without them.)
And the weird substance to dig their hands in would be...?
You guessed it! Dreadlocks! Somehow attached to each other- or not, I haven't completely decided yet- possibly knit together or maybe tied... Anyway, yes! The excitement!
And since I don't have dreadlocks on my own head that I could cut off in the thrill of a new art project, I've come to you, asking for help. I think dreadlocks are so extremely beautiful- I can't even explain it. The swirls and bumps and curls and textures and colors- overwhelming. ahhh. Anyway, haha, SO! My point being, after rambling for about four hours, if you are blessed with dreadlocks and you're like, eh, I don't even want dreads anymore/I feel like getting a dreadhawk and shaving half of my head/my mom really hates my dreadlocks and I'd do anything to please her, including cutting off all of my hair- instead of throwing your lovelies into the horrible, stinking, oozing trash, I'd like 'em!
Yeh? I realize how much work dreadlocks are/can be, and I also realize people cut off theirs every day for any reason, aaaand furthermore that some of those people simply throw their hours of love and turmoil into the garbage. So, I'm asking for your dreadlock donations! To be created into an art piece, which, when finished, will sit proudly in photographic form on this lj for all of you to see, and also probably to go into my crazy little space I'm making, which will be in at LEAST one art show. Hopefully more. And hopefully newspapers and such.
SO! my email, which you may use to retrieve my address, to send your darlings to, is firstname.lastname@example.org.
Also- completely sorry if this silly little post of mine isn't allowed, feel free to tear it down and throw it to the wind. Oh, and also again, if anyone is interested, I'm a 17 year old kid named Deanna from Ohio, and I'm planning on art school (or Antioch, bweehaha) next fall. Whooosh, life.
(and I also think I'll crosspost this a bit, because I'm thinkin I'll need a lot of locks :D )
